Aftercare Options

There are several different options regarding the after care of the pet. The first option is to take care of your pet’s body yourself. This would include burying the pet, taking the pet to a crematory, or taking the pet to a veterinary hospital to have cremation performed. Most people find caring for their pet after euthanasia to be very difficult.

The second option is to have Dr. Johnson take the pet for cremation. This would include a communal cremation or a private cremation. With a communal cremation, your pet is cremated with other pets and their collective ashes are scattered in the cemetery, so you do not get the remains returned to you. With a private cremation, your pet is cremated by themselves and the ashes are delivered to you within two weeks.

What to Expect

  • Dr. Johnson will arrive at your home and talk with you about your pet, go over any paperwork, and answer any questions.

  • When the family is ready to begin, Dr. Johnson will give 1-2 injection(s) which are a sedative and/or anesthetic combination that is given under the skin or into the muscle depending on your pet’s condition. This initiates relaxation and a deep sleep

  • When your pet and family are ready, Dr. Johnson will administer the euthanasia agent in the best place for your pet. Dr. Johnson will confirm death by listening to your pets chest. She will walk you through everything as it happens.

  • If you choose to have your pet cremated, Dr. Johnson will transport your pet for cremation. If you opt to receive ashes back, those ashes will be delivered to your home or to your local veterinary office for pick up.

  • Depending on how large your pet is, the doctor may need help with getting your pet into the vehicle for transportation. Please let Dr. Johnson know ahead of time if this is not possible.
